Ablation Side Effects
Endometrial ablation side effects will be discussed in the following article. This procedure is done in order to remove the uterus lining. It is used in patients who have prolonged or excessive menstrual bleeding, but can’t have a hysterectomy (for any reason). Some women simply do not like the idea of having a hysterectomy, so they opt for endometrial ablation.
This procedure can be done by using laser beam, radiofrequency, microwave, electricity, and freezing.
This procedure usually lasts no more than 45 minutes. In most cases, a spinal or local anesthesia is used, but general anesthesia can also be used in some cases.
Side Effects of Ablation
After having this procedure, you can experience certain side effects, like:
● Nausea
● Cramping
● Frequent urination
● Vaginal discharge that contains blood
You will be allowed to go home shortly after the surgery, but you will need a couple of weeks to recover completely.
This surgery is done in cases when patients can’t have a hysterectomy, because of some medical problems, or in cases when patients simply do not want to have a hysterectomy.
After the surgery, menstrual flow will be reduced, and some women will not have periods at all. Younger women are likely to have periods after the ablation. In some cases, the procedure will have to be repeated.
After having this procedure, you will have to avoid having sex, and you will also have to avoid tampon use.
There are certain risks, when it comes to this procedure:
● Burns
● Infections
● Uterus perforation
● Arterial blood flow blockage in the lungs
● Fluid can occur inside the lungs
These complications are rare, but they can cause serious problems.
Women who have endometrial cancer should not undergo this procedure.
Women, who are planning to get pregnant some day, should not undergo this procedure. Endometrial ablation leads to sterility, because the uterus lining is destroyed.
Pregnancy can still be possible in some women, even after this procedure, but these pregnancies are very risky and often ended in miscarriage.
