Before considering gripe water side effects, it is necessary to explain what the gripe water is first. It was formulated by the middle of the 19th century in England.
What Is Gripe Water
Its effects seem to be relieving for babies when it comes to gas and stomach pain related to it, but also the pain while baby’s teeth are growing. It is so helpful because of its ingredients: anise seeds, aloe, peppermint water, chamomile, ginger, glycerin etc. All of those ingredients help the digestion process and ease the pain.
It is important to know that the amount of gripe water must be defined before you start using it. The dose for a baby from 1 to 6 moths is 1 tea spoon a day, for babies who are more than 6 moths and less than two year old the dose doubles, so it is 2 tea spoons, and babies older than 3 years should take 3 tea spoons a day.
There are different brands of gripe water so consult the doctor before buying any. Even though the gripe water is very useful stuff, there are still side effects you should know about: dehydration, gas, vomiting, allergies, black stool, rashes, breathing problems or lips, tongue and face inflammations. Sometimes baby can fatten because of yeast which is a gripe water ingredient, and later it can be hard to burn that fat.
As we have mentioned, the gripe water brands produce different gripe water, so be careful when choosing. Never pick the one that doesn’t have the ingredients written on the pack. Even if you are sure of your choice, always talk to the doctor about it and ask him to recommend the gripe water that you can be sure of. Keep in mind that the wrong choice or a mistake in dose can result in problems instead of their solution. There were even cases of infections with the parasites that developed in water itself. When preserving the gripe water, make sure you keep in the refrigerator.
